“Slow Is Fast” chronicles what Dan Malloy has called “a mini-adventure in our backyard.” In September 2012, Dan Malloy, Kanoa Zimmerman and Kellen Keene jumped on a train headed north – along with bicycles, a surfboard, wetsuits, flippers, a microphone and some cameras. The idea was to travel down the coast by bike, stopping to surf; and staying with friends, family and acquaintances. They would set up camp when needed and do their best to earn their keep while learning from folks who do good work and get by along the California coast.

The result is “Slow is Fast”. A multi-media journal of the 58-day journey.

The 3 adventurers are skilled in 3 different types of storytelling. Malloy is a writer and Patagonia-sponsored surfer, Keene is a filmmaker, and Zimmerman is a photographer. They travelled with cameras, journals and surfboards. Creating the story in all three mediums… word, pictures and video.  A truly modern form of storytelling.

Beginning 100 miles north of San Francisco and winding their way south through Big Sur, Ojai, the Sierra Madre, “Slow is Fast” offers glimpses where hippie self-sufficiency blends with experiments in sustainable industry, agriculture and a reverence for? did you mean peace? It’s a journey of discovery.

I look at this product as a video/movie first, and the book itself is a fancy video sleeve extra.  At this level I loved it. The book was simple and very quick to read. It took me about an hour. At the end of the read, I said to myself…” Nice coffee table book” with good pictures and short bits of verbal wisdom.

Then I watched the video and my perception changed. I changed from liking the “Multi-media Journal” to loving it. The book was OK, the video was good and the whole package was very good.

After experiencing all 3 levels of the journal (word, photos and video) I truly felt connected with the storytellers.  I felt I was on an adventure with them.

Fun all around.
